In comparison to other POW camps under German control, captives at Stalag Luft III received “excellent” treatment for the majority of the war, according to a 1944 US Military Intelligence Service (MIS) report. The rubber from such items would wrap around the core and then be cased within leather stripped from shoes — a process eerily reminiscent of “featheries,” some of the earliest post-wooden golf balls ever made. Immortalized in a book and then a film of the same name, what became known as the “The Great Escape” wasn’t even the first breakout at Stalag Luft III. When three prisoners made a successful escape, suspicious German eyes homed in on the golf course and its sprawling mounds and greens. In 1979, he donated two balls he made while in Stalag Luft III to the USGA Golf Museum, artifacts that headline its exhibit on golf during the Second World War.

Last year, a Russian jet released a missile near a British Royal Air Force reconnaissance aircraft. But a new BBC report found that the pilot actually tried to shoot down the NATO aircraft but failed. The pilot of a Russian SU-27 fighter jet fired two missiles at a British RAF RC-135 Rivet Joint surveillance aircraft on September 29 last year. At the time, Russia claimed it was a "technical malfunction" — an explanation accepted by British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace. Since the incident, RAF flights have been escorted by Typhoon fighter jets armed with air-to-air missiles.

The Storm Shadow cruise missile is the latest highly touted weapon employed by Ukraine. Some observers believe Storm Shadow will be crucial to Ukraine's counteroffensive. The missile's 155-mile range allows Ukrainian jets to launch it while staying out of range of Russian air defenses. Daniel Duggan, a former US Marine Corps pilot, has been accused of violating the Arms Export Control Act by training Chinese military pilots. "Currently, Chinese jet engines can at best achieve one-fourth the life span of Western engines," the report says. To manufacture engines, China still needs to import complex machine tools, including equipment made in Germany, Japan, Italy, and South Korea. Once the war began, Borrel left Paris and took a crash course in nursing with the Red Cross. The German military defeated France in June 1940, but many French citizens took up arms in a resistance to Adolf Hitler and his troops. In the spring of 1942, the SOE recruited her. Moving between Paris and the countryside, she coordinated aerial supply drops and recruited, armed, and trained Resistance members. She was in the SOE's first training class for female agents, where she learned skills from hand-to-hand combat to Morse code.

But with over 890 F-35s delivered, there are more of them flying than all other stealth aircraft. With more than 890 F-35s delivered to date, there are more of these advanced fighters flying for nations around the world today than all other stealth aircraft on the planet ... combined. Jerod Harris/Getty ImagesAlthough the world's first stealth aircraft to enter operational service, the F-117 Nighthawk, began flying four decades ago now, the number of different stealth platforms in service today remains relatively small. A German fishing vessel that sank during World War II has been leaking pollutants that are changing the surrounding marine environment in the North Sea, according to a new study. The 80-year-old shipwreck is the V-1302 John Mahn, a fishing trawler that was used as a German patrol boat in WWII. The pollutants found in samples from the ocean floor included various heavy metals, including nickel and copper. "Although we don't see these old shipwrecks, and many of us don't know where they are, they can still be polluting our marine ecosystem," Van Landuyt said in the statement. The V-1302 John Mahn research is part of an initiative called the North Sea Wrecks project, which is studying the seabeds around shipwrecks off the Belgian coast.
